This paper addresses the following previously unstudied question in rangeland management: What is the optimal number of paddocks for rangelands that are managed using short duration grazing? We first use queuing theory to provide a novel stochastic characterization of a rangeland with paddocks that is managed using short duration grazing. Next, we use this characterization to show that the optimal number of paddocks is the solution to an expected profit maximization problem faced by a rancher.
