. 2003 Training Excellence Award Winners

By Dean Persons, Chief of Naval Education and Training Public Affairs

PENSACOLA, Fla. (NNS) -- Vice Adm. Alfred G. Harms Jr., commander, Naval Education and Training Command (NETC), recently announced the winners of the 2003 NETC Training Excellence Awards.

"This year's competition was especially keen, due to the exceptionally hard work and dedicated efforts of our trainers and educators throughout the past year," said awards board member and NETC Staff Command Master Chief Lewis Capehart. "Their many contributions to the revolution in training have dramatically reshaped the way we train and educate our force, and directly impact our ability to wage war on terrorism."

"Commands taking part in the competition were specifically graded on their demonstrated performance in providing more knowledge to more Sailors, faster and at less cost," said Capehart. "Creative and innovative efforts to achieve these goals (are), in my opinion, what made these commands truly stand out."

"The selection of these commands was extremely difficult," said Harms. "All the nominations highlighted the tremendous talent, dedication and focused commitment to mission found throughout the Navy Education and Training Command."

The Training Excellence Award is designed to give special recognition to commands demonstrating superior performance in meeting NETC's mission of providing the highest quality training to Sailors around the world. All NETC training activities and those conducting NETC training courses are eligible to submit nominations.

The selection criteria encompassed a broad range of factors, including how specific commands improved knowledge and skill retention, and the proficiency levels of both staff and students. They were also evaluated on how they increased participation in voluntary training and education programs, along with how they maximized the number of qualified Sailors successfully completing training in minimal instruction time.

The 2003 award winners are:

Large Training Commands: - Center for Cryptology, Corry Station, Pensacola, Fla.

Medium Training Commands: - Trident Training Facility, Kings Bay, Ga. - Navy and Marine Corps Intelligence Training Center, Dam Neck, Va.

Small Training Commands: - Mine Warfare Training Center, Ingleside, Texas.

Training Wings: - Training Squadron 10, Pensacola, Fla.

Each winner of the Training Excellence Award will receive an NETC letter of recognition, a plaque and a burgee (pennant) for display at the command for one year.
