Goshawks
Cook, FredANA Squadron News
Goshawks. The Goshawk Squadron's December meeting was held at the Mustin Beach Officers Club, NAS Pensacola, Florida. It was tri-sponsored by the squadron, the Pensacola Admirals Club of the Navy League and the USNA Alumni Association, and was the most successful and well attended ANA gathering in recent memory. The event's theme, "AOM & A Salute to Aviation JOs," was planned and organized as a way to pay tribute to the outstanding young men and women who are in Pensacola and just beginning their aviation careers. The ballroom at the club was standing room only as over 500 flight students and instructors from local commands attended to hear from our Naval Aviation Leadership.
VADM A1 Harms, Chief of Naval Education and Training, gave an outstanding motivational pitch that provded the young aviators present an idea of what great things are on the horizon. VADM Harms was so inspirational he had the "old warriors" present wishing they could get back in the pipeline!
RADM Pappy Boyington, Chief of Naval Air Training, spoke next and demonstrated why his positive style of leadership and common sense approach to doing business have been so effective throughout the training command. Pappy then introduced the COs of the Fleet Replacement Squadrons (FRS). They all gave excellent overviews of their type aircraft and what newly winged aviators could expect during their FRS training track.
The formal portrion of the meeting wrapped up with Q&As, and some excellent questions were fielded by CNET, CNATRA and the FRS COs. Thanks to help from Raytheon Aerospace, Sikorsky, Sodexho and Sabreliner Corp., there was plenty of food and refreshments for the happy hour that followed.
The JOs took full advantage of this opportunity to get the "informal gouge" from the senior leadership in attendance. The Goshawk Squadron's December meeting was such a smashing success it has been suggested the AOM/Happy Hour venue become a regularly scheduled event in the Pensacola region. There can be no better opportunity for our aviation leadership to go nose-to-nose with the future of Naval Aviation! (CDR Fred Cook, USN (Ret.))
