More Roadrunners. The Roadrunner Squadron commissioned its new ready room at the Scottsdale American Legion Post on 19 December. Skipper Dick Ferron arranged the Christmas party with roses for each lady while the gents enjoyed hangar flying and comparing notes about deployments from Guadalacanal to the Tonkin Gulf. Highlight of the meeting was a presentation by RADM Denny Wisely USN (Ret.), currently the Navy and Marine Corps accounts manager for General Dynamics Decision Systems. Denny's eye-watering career included test pilot school, squadron, air wing, and ship commands as well as a tour as Blue Angel One in the A-4 Skyhawk era. A veteran of 350 combat missions, he led the VF- 114 Aardvarks and the Navy in the MiG scoring column during 1967. As an aviator turned boat driver, Wisely afforded the perspective of captain of a provisional vessel ("Our main battery was a large refrigerator") and carrier. Noting that he loved the experience as CO of John F Kenndedy (CV 67), he said he learned far more about seamanship conning a single-screw deep-draft ship. The Roadrunners' January meeting is expected to be a joint op with the Tucson squadron, including plankowner Barrett Tillman's presentation on aviation research and writing.
