The Witness: A Video Review
Lucy WatkinsThis documentary is the story of the intellectual and emotional processes that Eddie Lama went through as he learned to love animals and to recognize their attributes and man's responsibilities to them. While there are moments of animal suffering shown in the film, the vast majority of it focuses on Lama's words, thoughts, and philosophy about the relationship between humans and animals.
I was deeply moved by this documentary, yet I struggle to find the words to describe the effect it's had on me. I didn't cry when I watched it; instead, I became very introspective. Not only did I want to run out and hug Lama, I wanted to take back every word I said in my article about activism (see page 10) and shout, "Go out and do it! Get the bastards who are hurting our animal friends!"
At the very least, this documentary got me thinking again about what is an old subject to me. Lama manages to express his views in a way that I'd never really considered before. For all the love and commitment I feel toward animals, I just hadn't quite put it together the way he does. Having been involved in the animal rights movement in one way or another for 15 years, I feel inspired again and armed with a fresh view. This is a must-see video for everyone who loves animals, is indifferent towards animals, wears fur, or has a pet. Frankly, it's a must-see for every human.
