Guard/reserve job rights published online
Tim DyhouseThe Department of Labor announced in September that it has proposed new regulations that will protect the employment rights of National Guardsmen and Reservists who are called to active duty. Labor published amendments to the Uniformed Services Employment and Re-employment Rights Act of 1994 (USERRA) at www.dol.gov/vets.
According to Labor, the amendments represent "the first time regulations have been developed to help enforce USERRA since passage of the law in 1994." Labor noted in a news release that more than 420,000 Guardsmen and Reservists--the most since World War II--have been mobilized since Sept. 11, 2001. More than 260,000 of them have since been demobilized.
USERRA protects Guardsmen and Reservists against discrimination or retaliation from civilian employers because of obligations stemming from military, service. For more information, access the Web site or call 1-866-4-USA-DOL.
