Cory block by British intelligence
EXCLUSIVE By CHRIS ANDERSONBRITISH intelligence services have blocked the publication the Cory Report into allegations of State collusion in a number of high- profile murder cases.
The Sunday Mirror has been told intelligence mandarins based at the MoD in London have threatened the NIO with a series of court injunctions in a bid to prevent the report findings being published.
Whitehall sources confirmed the NIO was facing what it called "mounting difficulties" in relation to the report.
The sources said solicitors, acting on behalf of the shadowy Joint Services Group (JSG), had formally contacted the NIO early last week.
The solicitors told the NIO they would take legal action against the Government should they publish any of Judge Cory's reports before intelligence service bosses examined them in detail.
Formerly known as the Force Research Unit, the JSG is responsible for all military intelligence matters in Northern Ireland and the Republic.
It has already been claimed members of FRU were involved in the murder of Belfast solicitor Pat Finucane.
According to the Whitehall source, intelligence chiefs want more time to study the ramifications of what retired Canadian Judge Peter Cory has uncovered during his 18-month long investigation into allegations of collusion.
"The official Government line is they are still considering the legal and security implications of the Cory Report prior to publishing itis findings", the source said.
"However, the reality is intelligence chiefs have said they will injunct the Government and block the publication of Cory's report until they study his findings minutely."
The source said it was now accepted within NIO circles that Judge Peter Cory had recommended a total of five public inquiries as a result of his investigations.
It is understood inquiries have been recommended in the cases of Pat Finucane, Rosemary Nelson, Billy Wright, Robert Hamill and RUC officers Harry Breen and Bob Buchanan.
Yesterday, David Wright, father of murdered LVF leader, Billy Wright said the intervention by the security services was proof of their involvement in murder.
