Football: DAVID IS CONN-FIDENT

ROBERT REID

DAVID CONNOLLY has not given up on a glorious World Cup- Premiership double this year.

Connolly is definitely going to the World Cup with the Republic of Ireland, he can count on that as one of Mick McCarthy's trusted footsoldiers, and he is also refusing to write off his chances of making it to the Premiership with Wimbledon.

The Dons are on the fringes of the First Division play-off zone, but their hopes hang in the balance with Connolly currently serving a four-match ban.

He won't be back until the final three games of the season, but the 17-goal striker is backing his team-mates to stay in contention in the meantime.

"We can still do it, with or without me," he said. "It won't be easy but there are still enough points to be won. Until it is mathematically impossible, we won't give up."

Connolly was not on the pitch for long against Denmark but still played a big part in Clinton Morrison's goal.

"I saw him out of the corner of my eye, and it was easy for him after that," Connolly said. "Clinton deserved a goal after working so hard during the game."

Connolly added: "To beat a team of Denmark's quality 3-0 was a fantastic result, and we could have won with more to spare, as we created enough chances.

"I wasn't given a lot of time but Mick knows what I can do. He gave Clinton a start to have a look at him. There's five of us competing for two places, if you take Damien Duff into consideration."
