  • 摘要:The contemporary art scene of the last fifteen years exemplifies, through its constituents’ work and speeches, a fascination with the occult. Interestingly, references to such practices as astrology, alchemy or any form of divination, are more and more treated with seriousness by contemporary artists. This lack of apparent irony or derision clashes with the iconoclastic relfex of contemporary art towards all forms of belief (Heinich 2011 : 147 ; Elkins 2004 : 57) and leaves us with a problem of interpretation rooted in this simple question: does the artist believe or no ? What should we make of these practises that seem to confuse conquered and revealed truths (Kahn 2012 : 61)? How are these artworks relevant for our contemporaneity ?Through the example of french artist Benoît Pype and his work Chutes libres (2013), this article endeavors to substantiate this hypothesis: relations between occult practices and present-day art can be read, through their undecidability, as a symptom of a crisis of modernity.
