摘要：Las velas eran un elemento de controversia en el siglo XVIII novohispano. La cultura religiosa que había favorecido el fasto luminoso mantenía su vigor, pero existían autoridades que rechazaban sus excesos bajo argumentos de economía y decencia del culto. Obispos y magistrados favorecían en cambio la iluminación asociada a prácticas devotas y al culto eucarístico. Al mismo tiempo, las velas eran un símbolo de poder ceremonial, motivo de querellas entre el clero, representantes del rey y del público.
其他摘要：Candles were an element of controversy in the 18th century New Spain. The religious culture that had favored the overwhelming brightness maintained its vigor, but these excesses were rejected by authorities through arguments of economics and worship decency. In contrast, bishops and magistrates favored the lighting associated with devotional practices and Eucharistic worship. At the same time, candles were a symbol of ceremonial power, which was a motive for complaints among the clergy, representatives of the king, and the public.
