摘要:I n his 2014 State of t he Union address, President Obama called on Congress to raise the federal minimum wage to $10.10 from $7.25. Soon after, states and cit ies began to act on their ow n. Connecticut became the first state to respond by increasing its mini- mum wage to $10.10, which will take effect in 2017. In Seattle, city lawma kers passed a $15 minimum wage bill, a lso to go into effect in 2017. A lthough only 4.3 percent of all hourly paid workers earned the federal minimum wage or less 1 in 2013 2 , raising t he minimum wage seems to be a topic t hat garners a lot of interest from citizens in every income bracket. The debate about the effects of the minimum wage is ongoing; lawmakers consider the impact that a change in the minimum wage will have on businesses, unemployment, worker pro- ductiv ity and the financial well-being of those employees who receive the minimum wage. Althoug h there are many facets of this debate, this article will focus on how t he vary ing cost of liv ing across and w ithin states affects the buying power of workers earning the min i- mum wage
